SuperSpeed USB to Give a Boost to USB Market: In-Stat

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

SuperSpeed, a new USB technology, is set to fuel the market over the next several years, according to a new study from In-Stat, a market intelligence agency focusing on mobile Internet and digital entertainment ecosystems.

SuperSpeed –  capable of delivering 5Gbps –  is a ten-fold improvement over the High-Speed USB. It is compatible with the billions of USB enabled devices currently deployed in the market. SuperSpeed USB is based on Sync-N-Go technology that minimizes user wait-time. It provides optimized power efficiency.

Additionally, SuperSpeed USB is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Devices interoperate with USB 2.0 platforms. Hosts support USB 2.0 legacy devices.

In-Stat (News - Alert) said SuperSpeed USB will represent more than 25 percent of the USB market by 2013.

The study titled “Wired USB 2009: High-speed Rules, SuperSpeed on the Way” also revealed that USB in computer mice will remain the single highest volume PC peripheral category.

“All PCs, and most PC peripherals have transitioned from full-speed to high-speed. Most of these devices will eventually transition to SuperSpeed, the only issue is the speed of the transition,” said Brian O’Rourke, In-Stat analyst, in a statement.

O’Rourke added that that the key to their deployment in PC peripheral devices will be how quickly SuperSpeed is integrated into the application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and microcontrollers that are the brains of these devices.

Recession has taken its toll on USB-enabled device shipments this year; however, this segment will find a growth in the coming years, especially because of the advancements in the technology.

USB has been the most successful interface ever produced. In 2008 alone, more than three billion devices have been shipped, In-Stat noted. The technology has been broadly adopted across PCs, PC peripherals, consumer electronics (CE), communications and automotive devices.

In-Stat study finds that consumer electronics devices with USB will rise at a 6.6 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2008 and 2013. Micro-USB ports are expected to become the dominant standard for connectors in mobile phones by 2013, the study said. Mini-USB ports have not grown significantly as a connector on mobile phones.
