4G Wireless Evolution - T-Mobile, Nortel Demo 'Real World' Next-Gen Mobile Communications Using LTE

In partnership with Nortel (News - Alert), T-Mobile claims it is the first wireless network operator to demonstrate next-generation mobile communications (referred to as NGMN for short) successfully under real-world, everyday conditions. The company successfully demonstrated the use of Long Term Evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) technology.

T-Mobile and Nortel were able to transmit data to and from a vehicle driving in Bonn between Deutsche Telekom's (News - Alert) headquarters on the left side of the river Rhine and the T-Mobile headquarters on the river’s right bank. Transmission went smoothly without interruptions and without loss of quality even across different cells on the four-kilometer test track data. The ability to transmit data across different cells without issues is considered to be one of the most important prerequisites for qualification as a mobile communications network of the future. Consisting of a multi-cell, end-to-end Nortel network, the equipment used in this test was established by Nortel. The vehicle used LG Electronics terminals.

At CeBIT (News - Alert) 2008, T-Mobile previously had displayed its expertise in the area of NGMN. With data download rates of up to 170 Mbit/s and upload rates of up to 50 Mbit/s, visitors were able to experience in an on-site demonstration how close to real time several HD videos were transmitted. T-Mobile plans to test applications with high demands on bandwidth and latency like HDTV, HD-Video or Online Gaming for its usability under real-world conditions

“As a pioneer in the development of NGMN, T-Mobile marked the next step in testing future technology with this field trial,” said Joachim Horn, chief technology officer at T-Mobile International, in a statement. “In line with the NGMN Alliance's recommendation we are the first network operator worldwide to take LTE as one of the possible new future technologies from the laboratory to the field. In doing so, we are consolidating our position as the leading network provider and innovation driver.”

Horn added: “At the same time, we are underlining our claim of continuing to offer our customers top quality and the fastest broadband connections for the mobile Internet with the next generation of networks.”

INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO West 2008 — the biggest and most comprehensive IP communications event of the year — concluded Thursday in Los Angeles, California. Thousands of attendees flocked to the event for three valuable days of exhibits, conferences and networking opportunities. Mark your calendar now for ITEXPO East 2009, February 2-4, 2009, in sunny Miami, Florida.
