UQ Communications Selects Mformation to Run Mobile WiMAX Service in JapanTMCnet Contributor UQ Communications, as part of the rollout of its advanced mobile WiMAX (News - Alert) network in Japan, has selected Mformation service manager, from Mformation Technologies, which offers advanced mobile device management (MDM) software, to provide seamless device management capabilities for new WiMAX-capable devices.
Mformation's (News - Alert) platform, which ensures that WiMAX-capable devices can be remotely activated and provisioned irrespective of their source, has already been licensed to operators such as Bell Mobility, Sprint (News - Alert), T-Mobile, Telefónica, Telus and Vodafone.
The UQ Communications venture is a partnership of KDDI (News - Alert) Corporation, Intel Capital, East Japan Railway Company, Kyocera Corporation, Daiwa Securities Group and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.
Chipmaker Intel is one of the leading companies that are trying to promote WiMax across the globe.
The mobile WiMAX roleout for UQ Communication is significant as WiMax is expected to deliver mobile Internet, allowing users to access advanced data applications and personal content from anywhere in the WiMAX coverage area, on any WiMAX-enabled device.
“Working with UQ on this very important mobile broadband initiative is great validation of the power of our comprehensive MDM platform,” said Mark Edwards (News - Alert), CEO for Mformation, in a statement. “UQ Communications had very demanding requirements; we have consistently demonstrated our ability to support these requirements as UQ Communications moves forward with its aggressive plans for rollout of WiMAX-based services. We look forward to supporting UQ on this important initiative.”
With support for more than 1,400 devices across any mobile network type, Mformation service manager is the leading management product for WiMAX, supporting leading global service providers like Sprint/Xohm as they roll out mobile WiMAX-based services, the company said in a statement.
“Advanced device management is fundamental to ensuring that our WiMAX services work seamlessly and provide a great user experience,” said Toshikazu Yokai, general manager, Network Technology Department of UQ Communications, in a statement. “The ability to remotely activate, manage and support any WiMAX device — regardless of where it is purchased — will create a compelling proposition for users and a truly open mobile marketplace, allowing customers to purchase their own devices and activate them where, when and however they choose.”
“With our deep knowledge of the Japanese marketplace, we look forward to ensuring that the advanced Mformation solution is integrated to support UQ’s complex service environment,” said Junichi Maruta, general Manager, Telecom Systems Planning Division of CTC. CTC, a system integrator in Japan, is undertaking the systems integration role for this program.
