Red Bend Software, a company that specializes in Mobile Software Management (MSM), has announced its software has been implemented in Kyocera’s Katana Eclipse handset. The handset will be sold under the SANYO brand in the U.S. for Sprint (News - Alert) Nextel customers.

Red Bend’s vCurrent Mobile software for firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating and vDirect Mobile client for device management has been used in Katana Eclipse handset.

The vCurrent Mobile wirelessly updates firmware of handsets which are in the possession of consumers. This solution also offers fail-safe function which ensures secure update completion even if power supply is not present during update. The solution is interoperable with device management (DM) servers which are compliant with Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) standards.

vDirect Mobile is a DM client which is interoperable with standards-based DM servers and it allows operators and manufacturers to serve new subscribers besides being capable of configuring applications and network settings.

Ovum (News - Alert), the market research firm reported that Red Bend has 57 percent market share of FOTA-enabled handsets available throughout the world. Also Red Bend’s MSM solutions have been implemented by 7 out of the top 10 mobile phone manufacturers. The list includes LG Electronics, Motorola, Sharp, Sony Ericson, NEC and Toshiba (News - Alert). Red Bend not only serves the mobile handset industry, its MSM products are used in mobile broadband PC cards, WiMAX, and USB modems and also in machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless modules.

Kyocera’s (News - Alert) Katana Eclipse is a SCP-6750 SANYO branded handset especially designed for Sprint Nextel customers in the US. The handset has been designed to look like a ‘Katana’ which is a Japanese sword. It features LED illumination which is easily customizable. The handset surface has a liquid-crystal display and music keys and the music player can be used even if the handset is closed.

Bluetooth stereo and several other rich multimedia functionality are included in the handset. Voice recognition features can be used to dial on the phone and operate the GPS function.

Sprint Nextel offers several services in addition including the Sprint Music Store, Sprint Picture/Video Mail, Sprint Navigation (GPS service), Sprint TV and wireless data backup.
Red Bend Software enables mobile phone manufacturers and network operators to drive the adoption of new services and features, act proactively to satisfy needs of customers and bring down support costs using mobile software management solutions. Red Bend’s firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) is used by major handset manufacturers like LG Electronics, Motorola, NEC, Sharp, and Sony Ericsson (News - Alert). FOTA mobile client software delivers compact firmware updates fast and reliably to over 365 million mobile phones already sold to consumers.
