Smith Micro Mobile WiMAX Management Software for Clearwire
Executive Editor, IP Communications Group The Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX (News - Alert)) otherwise known as the IEEE 802.16 standard has captured public interest as the most recent attempt to use a wireless broadband technology to offer packet-switched services for fixed, nomadic, portable and mobile access.
The first incarnation of WiMAX (IEEE (News - Alert) 802.16-2004) dealt with fixed and nomadic access. Then came the IEEE’s amendment of 802.16e-2005, called Mobile WiMAX, which added sleep mode, idle mode, extensive security, as well as handover and other roaming functions for mobile devices.
Mobile WiMAX overcomes bandwidth limitations of existing 3G “barely broadband” wireless networks and will eventually supply truly high bandwidth wireless Internet services cost-effectively any time, any place. WiMAX basically specifies only Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical (PHY) layer functions, and thus originally had no networking support.
Only recently, however, have carriers, developers and industry standards people fully worked out Mobile WiMAX management, in the process figuring out way of keeping the new infrastructure flexible, scalable and capable of being integrated with the current hybrid network.
Efforts by the 802.16e group and the Network Working Group of the WiMAX Forum (News - Alert) have resulted in management concepts for a complete post-3G network solution that is fully interoperable in nature and can handle any sort of link and network layer handover.
And now, Smith Micro Software, Inc., a developer and marketer of mobility solutions and services for the wireless market, has announced it has been selected by Clearwire Corporation to deliver connection management software for their Mobile WiMAX customers. Smith Micro Software designed a connection manager enabling customers to connect to Clear Mobile WiMAX service.
In conjunction with this widely-deployed 4G wireless service, Smith Micro has customized the connection manager specifically to Clear’s Mobile WiMAX requirements. This application features a highly refined user interface emphasizing ease-of-use, reliability and simplicity. The application also supports most of today’s major WiMAX devices.
Clearwire (News - Alert) and Smith Micro have combined their expertise to deliver a next-generation connectivity solution for businesses and consumers.
Smith Micro Software, Inc., is headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California, and had offices in Europe and Asia. They specialize in mobility solutions that enable people to connect, share, distribute and manage information over wireless and wired networks.
