Media processing solutions firm Octasic (News - Alert) has formed a Software Defined Radio (SDR) development group designed to provide wireless solutions based on its Opus DSP technology targeting current and emerging wireless markets.

Octasic’s Opus DSP core architecture is a media gateway solution to enable flexible business model for OEMs designing media gateways.

The group will be fronted by Emmanuel Gresset as vice president of Software Defined Radio (SDR). Gresset recently joined Octasic from STMicroelectronics (News - Alert) where he managed strategic development for the Wireless Infrastructure Division.

The Montreal-based company’s wireless initiative is targeting baseband signal processing solutions for wireless infrastructure platforms extending from femto cells to macro basestations, according to Gresset.

"Octasic has a strong history in DSP innovation and development," said Gresset. "The SDR team will expand on Octasic's strengths in multimedia voice and video gateways by adding development platforms for the next generation of multi-standard wireless products that will address the needs of software-defined baseband processors for 2G, 3G and 4G basestations."

The Octasic wireless team will unveil its first fully soft baseband solution aimed at GSM/EDGE radio basestations next month at the GSMA Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) in Barcelona from February 16-19, 2009.

Octasic's wireless program is based on the company's Opus DSP core technology that, through its asynchronous core, provides flexibility, high performance, very low power consumption, and an easily extensible and programmable design platform.

The new group is comprised of expert wireless engineers from France, Spain, China, India and Canada. This team is now completely based in Montreal and is designing the industry's lowest-power DSP solutions for wireless infrastructure.
